A story for World Empathy Day

World Empathy Day is about helping everyone understand others and their feelings through reading and listening to stories.

So get cosy and comfy with LEYF teacher, Ricky, as he reads Giraffes Can’t Dance by Giles Andreae and Guy Parker-Rees, for World Empathy Day (10 June).

This is a great story to help toddlers and pre-school children to understand empathy and kindness.

Gerald the giraffe wants to join in with the Jungle Dance, but he knows he is too clumsy to dance. The other animals laugh when they see Gerald attempt to join in with the fun.

Gerald is feeling sad, but a cricket encourages him to think about different sorts of music he could dance to. So Gerald finds his own way to dance and the other animals realise that Gerald is actually a really good dancer.

Children should be able to put themselves in Gerald’s shoes and feel his sadness and rejection, followed by his happiness, as he finds his own unique way to enjoy dancing and music.
