Food and Nutrition
For us, meals are important social times, with staff and children always eating together.
We provide a diverse and enticing menu of healthy and nutritious meals, and in the majority of our nurseries these are all freshly cooked on site. Specific dietary requirements are also catered for. Wherever possible, we buy local produce and often grow our own fruit and vegetables to help children understand the journey of their food from field to plate!
We always help children to practice good table manners. They use cutlery, serve themselves from serving dishes and scrape their own plates clean when they have finished. We encourage them to wait patiently before they begin, eat with their mouths closed, and no elbows on the table! The results are plain to see: pleasant meal times and happy children, both enjoying and contributing to the whole experience.
We have also partnered with the Children’s Food Trust to help them develop their National Guidance for Early Years Settings, and led the development of the National Standards for Professional Cooking for Early Years Chefs.
We’re also part of the Early Years Nutrition Partnership, which aims to improve the health of young children by setting a standard for nutrition practice in early years settings. Watch this great film they made in our Townmead nursery
